Exploring Religion in Public Life
To celebrate the graduation centennial of two of its most esteemed alumni, Reinhold Niebuhr (’10) and H. Richard Niebuhr (’12), Elmhurst College recently launched a yearlong series of dialogues on faith—its varieties, contradictions and influence in the modern world.
“At a time when religious rhetoric justifies acts of violence and non-religious rhetoric attacks constitutionally protected speech and worship, Elmhurst College is providing opportunities where the proper role of religion in our public life can be explored, debated and defined,” said Elmhurst President S. Alan Ray.
Still Speaking draws on the College’s deep connection and shared values with the United Church of Christ. Indeed, the series takes its name from the UCC’s “God Is Still Speaking” initiative, an ongoing campaign to re-affirm the Church’s role as a welcoming, justice-minded community.
